Human time, machine time: a fracture we must inhabit

Today we live in an era where human time and machine time run on two tracks. They never really meet. At most, they barely touch. On one side: the biological and cultural rhythm of people. A rhythm that needs to let experiences settle, to truly understand them before turning them into habits. On the other side: the time of artificial intelligence – which probably moves faster than we, as humans, can observe. It's a time that renews itself, expands, changes direction while we're still trying to figure it out.
In between these two movements, a fracture opens up. Not just a technological gap. But a real, concrete space – inhabited every day by individuals, institutions, and economies trying to navigate a change that, in some ways, keeps slipping through our fingers. We didn't choose this fracture. It runs through us. And it forces us to live with processes that keep reconfiguring, content that keeps multiplying, decisions – yes, the ones that affect people – shifting toward automated systems. Even systems capable of acting on their own.
Society, meanwhile, tries to interpret what's happening. Even when it doesn't quite have the tools to do so. Ethical concerns inevitably tangle with economic ones. Privacy becomes fragile. Politics moves cautiously. And entire segments of the population risk being left behind by an evolution that waits for no one – that just keeps going, tirelessly. In this scenario, coexistence between humans and AI models is no longer a future hypothesis. It's our present condition. The space we move through every day. Often with a lot of uncertainty.
The Context of Change
To truly understand where we are, we need to observe how technology is changing the way we live – often silently, without us even fully noticing. It's not simply about new tools. It's about an ecosystem that transforms as we use it. A system that, in some ways, seems to renew itself: collecting data, reprocessing it, generating new possibilities, then releasing them back into circulation. Almost without waiting for us.
People, though, need time. Time to adapt, to figure out what really changes and what remains. This is where the fracture begins to take shape: not as a wall, but as a suspended space – an interregnum where enthusiasm, fear, curiosity, and a certain disorientation coexist.
Institutions try to keep up, but more often than not they find themselves reacting rather than leading. Businesses experiment, sometimes without a clear sense of where it's all heading. Communities split: some embrace the change, others observe it with suspicion. And we, as individuals, move between these poles, trying to understand what role we can still play in a world that's changing faster than our ability to keep up with it. Technical speed isn't just an external factor. It's a daily presence that accompanies us, stimulates us, and, every now and then, puts us to the test.
Speed, Ethics, and the Fragility of Systems
Technology is moving fast. Probably faster than we're willing to admit. Every update, every more powerful model, every new application seems to push us one step further – without giving us time to understand where we're headed.
Humans, though, move at a different pace. Slower, more reflective, more tied to the need to make sense of things. It's as if the two tracks – innovation on one side, human experience on the other – were running parallel. Close, yet separate. And in that gap between them, the rift widens.
In that space of uncertainty, our deepest concerns gather. Privacy is no longer just about data. It's about identity, about control, and – ultimately – about trust. Political systems need time to deliberate, but more often than not they find themselves chasing after phenomena that have already settled in. Economies, already fragile, have to wrestle with an automation that's reshaping entire sectors – leaving some communities with no bearings left.
Then there's the heterogeneity of populations. We don't live in a uniform world: different cultures, different levels of education, different generations, different economic conditions. Separations aren't just material; they're symbolic too. And wherever separations exist, tensions tend to emerge. Conflicts, when they attach themselves to complex, fast-moving systems, often generate levels of entropy that are hard to control. That's a risk we can't ignore – at least not for now. Because technological speed doesn't erase fragilities. More often than not, it just makes them more visible.
Resources, Demography, and Sustainability: Inhabiting the Fracture
If we broaden our gaze beyond our daily lives, we realize that the fracture between human and machine time intertwines with another tension – perhaps even older – one of resources. We live on a planet approaching nine billion inhabitants. A planet that, in some ways, no longer seems capable of distributing what it produces in an equitable way. Wealth gets concentrated. Opportunities cluster in a few areas, while others – many others – remain on the margins.
AI doesn't arrive in a neutral world. It grafts itself onto terrain already marked by deep fragilities. And in all likelihood, it makes those fragilities more visible. Demography isn't just a statistical backdrop. It's a factor that affects the sustainability of social systems, migration, tensions between generations, and access to education and technology. Some regions of the world are growing fast. Others are aging. Still others are emptying out. And in this uneven mosaic, AI tends to settle where there's infrastructure, capital, and skills. Elsewhere, though, it risks widening gaps that are already profound. This is where the rift widens: not only between people and machines, but between territories, cultures, genders, and economic conditions.
Added to this already complex picture is an element that, in a sense, is knocking on the door of the future: the so-called "robotic revolution." If AI has transformed how we produce and decide, robotics promises to transform how we interact. A robot that moves, gestures, modulates its voice, or simulates an emotion – that might seem like a technical detail. But for many of us, it represents a perceptual leap. Our tendency to anthropomorphize what resembles us makes these systems feel close, almost familiar. And at the same time – in some ways – unsettling. Robotics could become a bridge or a fault line: a point of integration or a breaking point. It doesn't close the rift between the two speeds. It makes it subtler. More nuanced. Harder to interpret.
This is a huge topic – we can only introduce it here. It deserves a closer look, because robotics isn't simply an extension of AI. It's a qualitative leap. One that could redefine the very nature of coexistence between people and autonomous systems. And, likely, it will be one of the places where a significant part of our future plays out. In this scenario, sustainability is no longer just about the environment. It's about the ability of social systems to withstand the impact of a change that's moving at a speed we can't fully control.
The production of increasingly powerful models requires energy, infrastructure, and investments that only a few global players can sustain. This concentrates technological power. And it risks creating a divisive economy – one where many remain spectators rather than protagonists. And so, having come this far, the question that runs through the entire article almost asks itself. It's not a technical question. Nor a political one. It's a human question. Perhaps inevitable.
Will we really be able to live with a machine time that runs faster than our own – without losing our sense of who we are, and how we want to inhabit the world?
